Thanks for this information I have exactly the same problem. It works with importing the files directly from the micro SD Card.

Very helpful!!!! Importing took place immediately. Taking the micro SD card and plugging into the MAC with the USB adapter was way faster. Thanks.

I also is running in the same issue. I do although have an older iMac with USB 2.0. Interesting enough is that my first transfer in July was really quick and I did not encounter any problems.

I think theres a real issue here - the same thing happened to me with a relatively new mac (september 2015) and wouldnt budge from the initiation mode but then when i plugged it into a windows coputer it all worked fine so i cant see it being a problem with the files or the SD card but rather a bug on the mac app?

Same problem here.
Import is getting stuck at import initializing. It happens on the USB Cable en it also happens when you pull out the micro sd en stick in into my mac directly.
Is there a way to solve this problem.? My mac is late 2013

Similar problem here. Initializing import is stuck forever.
Setup: MacBook Air 11' (early 2014), GoPro Hero5 via USB-C cable using the 128GB Lexar MicroSDXC Card that GoPro recommends.

Android message app for mac.
Hi
The solutions posted here is not a solution but a work around. The Quik app doesnt work as intended and should be patched. I have a brand new Hero 5 black with SD card that is 10% used and the 'Initializing import' never finishes. I dont have SD card reader and the OSX Photos app imports everything without problem.
